You Don’t Have to Wait to Start Living Like a Traveler
You have got the dream and you are not quite ready to leave yet. That is okay. Here are ten specific things you can start doing today that will make you more prepared, more confident, and a whole lot clearer on what you actually want when the time comes.
The dream doesn’t begin when you leave. It begins right now, wherever you are

1
Start Dreaming Specifically, Not Just Generally
What kind of vehicle do you actually want? Do you want a van, a converted school bus, a camper? What size? What features matter most to you? A lot of people say they want a shower, and I get it, I really do. But I will tell you from experience that many people who build a shower in their rig end up using it to store their dirty laundry and extra paper towels. If a shower is on your must-have list, great. But test that theory. Think it through. The more specific you get now about what you actually need versus what just sounds good, the better decisions you will make later. -
2
Start Decluttering, and Be Honest With Yourself
You cannot bring most of it. You just can’t. So start now. Go through your stuff and start letting it go. Your six sets of sheets, your collection of kitchen gadgets, the things you are holding onto just in case. The road teaches you real fast what you need and what you don’t, so get a head start on that lesson while you are still home and the stakes are low. -
3
Tell Your People What You Are Planning
Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Tell your kids, especially your kids, because they have been used to you being there and this is going to be a shift. When you start talking about your dream out loud, something changes. People start sending you information, sharing ideas, following along mentally. And when you do leave, they won’t be blindsided. They will already be rooting for you. Your family might push back at first. That is normal. But they need to know this is your goal, and you are serious about it. -
4
Learn to Live Like You Are Already on the Road
Start practicing the habits now. If you are not going to shower every day in a van, stop showering every day now. Figure out how much water you actually use. Learn to be more efficient with it. Wear your clothes more than once before washing them. Get comfortable with a simpler routine. You do not have to be uncomfortable about it, you are just getting to know yourself better before you hit the road. -
5
Learn to Cook Small
You are not bringing your Crock Pot, your air fryer, your toaster oven, or your espresso machine. You might have two or three cooking tools, maybe. So start figuring out what you can make with less. What meals actually work when your kitchen is tiny? What do you genuinely need to feel satisfied and fed? That big Sunday lasagna is for when you are visiting someone with a real kitchen. Figure out your road meals now, while you have time to experiment. -
6
Track Your Spending and Start Spending Modestly
Get a real sense of where your money goes right now. The daily coffee run, the takeout, the subscriptions you barely use. Some of those things you will miss on the road. Some of them you won’t at all. Finding out now, on your own terms, is way better than figuring it out when you are parked somewhere with a tight budget and no wiggle room. -
7
Research Your Vehicle
If you have an idea of what you want, whether it is a Sprinter van, a ProMaster, a short bus, whatever it is, get into it. Join the Facebook groups. Read the forums. Find out what people love about it and what they regret. Ask about common problems, what breaks down, what is expensive to fix, what works in different climates. Get to know the communities around these vehicles. These people have lived it and they will tell you the truth. -
8
Figure Out How Much Water You Actually Use
This is one people never think about until they are on the road with a nearly empty tank. Track it for a week. Showers, dishes, brushing your teeth, cooking. How much do you use in a day? Now cut it in half and see how that feels. This is real information that will help you figure out what size water tank you need and whether your habits are going to work in a smaller space. -
9
Research the Places You Want to Go
Do not wait until you are driving toward a destination to figure out when the best time to visit is or where the good spots are. Do that research now while you have quiet time and unlimited internet. When is peak season? What are the must-see spots that most people miss? Where do travelers like you tend to gather? Learn about the places on your list before you get there, so you can spend your actual time there fully present. -
10
Build Your Community Before You Need It
Get into the groups. Follow people who are already doing what you want to do. Ask questions. Read their posts. Listen to what they say worked and what did not. You are not just gathering information, you are building a network of people who will matter to you on the road. The travel community is genuinely one of the most generous, welcoming groups of people I have ever met. Start connecting with them now. They are out there, and they are wonderful.
